Traffic

The traffic map page provides graphical and text format information about estimated traffic speeds and travel times, highway camera images, message board content, incidents, construction, congestion, and weather.

At statewide view, you will see the regional interactive map. Click on one of the colored regions on the map and you will automatically be directed to the Traffic Map page. The map will already be zoomed into your selected region. Or you can select a region using the drop down filter at the top of the page. The map legend will let you select your required information layers.

The drop down menu at the top of the map allows you to select an area in the state and the map will zoom into that area. If you choose "Statewide" the whole original graphic of the state will replace the map.

Once you select a region, you can zoom on the map.

Map Legend

The map legend lists what traffic information can be shown on the map. Map legend items are active depending on the zoom level of the map. You can choose just the information that you want to see by clicking the boxes beside each kind of information. When the map is zoomed out to a regional level, you will not be able to select Travel Times, Cameras or Messages Boards because the map will become too cluttered and hard to read. As you zoom in closer, these options will be activated.

You can hide the legend by clicking on the tab with the double arrows. This will allow the map to fill the whole screen. To show the legend, click on the double arrow tab again.

When you check the Traffic Speeds box, the roads will become color-coded to indicate the current average speed of vehicles on the road. The legend shows which colors represent which speeds, and the color scheme can be changed to match your preference. Click on the words "Color Options" to display the other options. Select a speed link color combination by clicking on the button above the set of colors you prefer. Then close the option box by pressing the "Close" button.

In order to make the box stay on the screen, click on the icon. You can then close the box by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the box.

To show the location of message boards on the roadways, click the checkbox beside "Message Boards" on the map legend. The Message Board icon will appear on the map wherever there is a message board. When you hover over the message board icon on the map, a hover box will display the message board information. The hover box will disappear when you move the mouse away from the icon. In order to make the box stay on the screen, click on the icon. You can then close the box by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the box.

To show the location of incidents on the roadways, click the checkbox beside "incidents" on the map legend. The Incident icon will appear on the map wherever there is a current incident affecting traffic. When you hover over the incident icon on the map, a hover box will display the accident information. The hover box will disappear when you move the mouse away from the icon. In order to make the box stay on the screen, click on the icon. You can then close the box by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the box.

To show the location of construction on the roadways, click the checkbox beside "Construction" on the map legend. The Construction icon will appear on the map wherever there is current construction. In order to make the box stay on the screen, click on the icon. You can then close the box by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the box.

To show the location of congestion on the roadways, click the checkbox beside "Congestion" on the map legend. The Congestion icon will appear on the map wherever there is congestion. In order to make the box stay on the screen, click on the icon. You can then close the box by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the box.

If there is a weather event that affects traffic, it will be shown on the map if you click the checkbox beside "Weather" on the legend. The weather icon will appear on the map where there is a weather event. When you hover over the weather icon on the map, a hover box will display the weather event. The hover box will disappear when you move the mouse away from the icon. In order to make the box stay on the screen, click on the icon. You can then close the box by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the box.

When an incident occurs on a covered roadway that does not fit under one of the other categories, it will be listed as "Other." Click on the box next to "Other" in the map legend. When an "Other" event happens, the icon will appear on the map. Hover over the icon to get more details on the event. The hover box will disappear when you move the mouse away from the icon. You will also be able to see travel times on your routes by logging into your My Florida 511 account at FL511.com.

    • Floodgate Alerts – Alerts announcing roadway, regional and statewide emergencies — such as wildfires, hurricanes, AMBER Alerts, Silver Alerts or LEO Alerts — within a selected region of Florida

Click the "Create Alert" button to add a new custom alert. Click the "Edit" or "Delete" buttons to change or remove alerts you have previously created.

Create My Florida 511 Account/Edit Profile

The "Create a My Florida 511 Account" and "Edit Profile" pages are the same, except the Edit page will already have your information entered (except your password) and allows you to edit any part of your profile. New users must create an account with My Florida 511 to customize routes or receive alerts. Fields that must be filled in have an asterisk (*) beside them.

Once you create your profile, you must then create at least one custom route or alert for your profile to be activated.

When you first access the account setup page, you will be asked to enter the following information:

  • Username - (Required) A unique name which you will use to log onto My Florida 511. A username can be up to 30 characters long, with no punctuation or symbols. Your username is case insensitive.
  • Password (and confirmation) - (Required) You need a password to access your account online. The password must be between four (4) and eight (8) characters long, and may consist only of letters and/or numbers. Passwords are case sensitive. Since My Florida 511 uses Caller ID technology to identify you when you call, you will not need your password when you call.
  • Primary E-mail Address (and confirmation) - (Required) This is the e-mail address to which My Florida 511 will send alerts (if you choose e-mail alerts), information on system updates and your password in case you forget it. This is also the address to which we will send occasional notices about Florida 511 system upgrades and improvements. See our Privacy Policy for more information.
  • Secondary E-mail Address (and confirmation) - You may enter a secondary e-mail address where you may receive e-mail alerts instead of, or in addition to, your primary e-mail address
  • Primary Phone (and confirmation) – Register the phone number from which you will call 511 most often, and to which you would like My Florida 511 alerts (phone and text) sent. This phone must have outgoing Caller ID information for the system to recognize you (some office phones do not have this feature or do not show direct phone numbers). Type in the entire number, including area code, using no parentheses, dashes or spaces. For example – 5551230987.
  • Secondary Phone Number – You can enter an alternate number from which you may occasionally call 511 or on which you would prefer to receive text or phone alerts. The primary number might be your cell phone number and the secondary your home or office phone. Using an office phone number that does not have a direct outside line may not work.
  • Language Preference – The My Florida 511 phone and Web system, including your personalized routes and alerts, are available in English or Spanish. When you set a preference, all your calls from your primary and secondary phone numbers will select that language by default.
  • Secret Question And Answer - This is the question My Florida 511 will ask you in case you forget your password. You will need to answer this question correctly before the system will send a message to your primary e-mail address containing a new password. The secret question helps prevent others from resetting your password without permission.

Routes

This section displays the custom routes you have already created. There are options to edit or delete existing custom routes. By clicking the "Create Route" button, you can add more custom routes to your personalized services profile.

Create a Route
Click "Create Route" on your User Homepage to bring up the "Add Route" page. To the right of the page is a map showing the state of Florida. As you add custom routes to your profile, the roadway segment will appear on the map so you can visually verify that all entered routes are correct. A smaller wide-view map in the bottom right corner assists with scrolling around the map. The following sections will allow you to customize your routes:

  • Name - My Florida 511 gives you a choice from 10 different pre-named routes. You may also create your own route names using letters, numbers, symbols and spaces. Using common English (or Spanish) words and names will help the phone system understand you better when you call.
  • Roadway – Choose the roadway on which your route begins.
  • Start and End Points – Designated points closest to where you will enter and exit the selected roadway while driving your route. Most Start and End points are exits or cross streets.
  • Save Segment – Click "save segment" to add the segment to your route. If you are done with your route, click "Create Route." Or you may continue to add additional roadways and segment to your route in the same way you added the first.

To edit a route, click the "Edit" button next to the route you wish to change on the User Home Page. You can click on an existing segment to change the Start and/or End Location, add a new segment by following the steps above, or Delete a segment. You can also change the Route’s name.

To delete a route, click the "Delete" button next to the route you wish to change on the User Home Page.

Alerts

This page shows all alerts you have previously added to your profile. By clicking the "Create Alert" button, you can add three types of alerts:

  • Region & Roadway Alerts – Alerts reporting incidents affecting the flow of traffic within a certain Florida region (Panhandle, Northeast Florida, Central Florida, Tampa Bay, Southwest Florida or Southeast Florida) or along the 511-covered roadway you choose
  • Route Alerts – Alerts reporting incidents along any of your My Florida 511 personalized routes
  • Floodgate Alerts – Alerts announcing roadway, regional and statewide emergencies — such as wildfires, hurricanes, AMBER Alerts, Silver Alerts or LEO Alerts — within a selected region of Florida. AMBER Alerts are notifications about missing or abducted children. Silver Alerts are notifications about mission seniors 60 years or older who have an irreversible deterioration of intellectual faculties. LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) Alerts are notifications about an offender who has seriously injured or killed a law enforcement officer

When you create an alert, you'll need to specify the following information:

  • Severity – Select the minimum level of severity of incidents for which you would like to receive alerts. You will receive all alerts on all incidents at that level and above. Unknown alerts are the lowest and will provide you with all alerts.
    • Severe incidents have caused lanes to be blocked for more than two hours, or have caused total road blockage on the reported road.
    • Moderate incidents have blocked one or more lanes for between half an hour and two hours.
    • Minor incidents have blocked one or more lanes for less than half an hour.
    • Unknown incidents are those for which 511 doesn't have enough information to categorize.
  • Event Type – This selects what type of alerts you wish to receive: congestion, crashes, construction, severe weather or special events. This only applies to regional, route or roadway alerts.
  • Alert Days – You must select which day or days of the week you wish to receive this alert.
  • Start and End Times – Select what time of day you would like to start and stop receiving this alert. Any alerts of the appropriate type that are active between the start and end times will be sent to you. Any applicable alert active at your designated start time will be sent to you.
  • Delivery Type – You can receive an alert via e-mail, text message or phone call. Standard text message charges and cell phone minutes may apply.

After filling out all applicable fields relating to what kind of alert you want, you are given three options of how you are to be notified. You can have an e-mail sent to you, a text message to your primary and/or secondary phone number, a telephone call to your primary and/or secondary phone number or any combination of the above. By clicking the "Create Alert" button, you will save the alert information and be returned to the User Home Page.
